Frederick University - COORDINATOR (Cyprus):

Frederick University (FU) is one of the four recognised private Universities operating in the Republic of Cyprus. It is an energetic and vibrant university, enjoying respect and recognition both nationally and internationally. FU offers a broad range of academic programmes of study in diverse areas such as, Science, Engineering, Business, Arts, Architecture, Media, Humanities, Health, and Education and has a strong focus on academic research, being one of the leading research organizations in the country. The University comprises of 5 Schools and 14 Departments and is recognized as the university that offers novel and innovative programs of study (more than 75) that address societal needs and, primarily, as the university that exhibits high social sensitivity and responsibility. FU employs about 250 (fte) faculty, with 3500 students enrolled annually on average and operates from two campuses, in Nicosia and Limassol. FU has also developed the necessary experience and elearning infrastructure for offering accredited programs of study through Distance Learning. The research initiatives and activities that are being carried out by its faculty, place the University among the most successful organizations in Cyprus with respect to the level of financial support received for projects from external sources through competitive national and European programs, including LLP, LIFE, FP7, ERASMUS+ and from Regional Funds. The Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) is under the umbrella of School of Education at Frederick University. The Department of PESS specializes in a) preparing and training of future physical education teachers, b) developing coaches in competitive sports, c) promoting indoor and outdoor recreational activities and sports for enhancing health through physical activity, b) promoting lifestyle changes for health promotion. The Department is strongly involved in the promotion of physical education through its co operations with governmental and nongovernmental sports organisations and educational authorities. Specifically, a joint agreement with the Limassol Municipality has been made with planned actions focusing on health-enhancing strategies and promotion of physical activity to the public. Additionally, Memorandums of Understating have been signed between Frederick University and Cyprus Olympic Committee as well as Cyprus Sports Organisation, which focus on activities for sport participation and physical activity promotion. The School of Education and the PESS Department have managed to create an extensive network of synergies in the local community, ranging from private and public schools of Primary and Secondary Education, gyms and training places which are exploited as part of the program curriculum for the needs of practical experience and pedagogy courses.
